Iterations is back in 2008 with a fresh set concepts to keep this original Cortland County community arts collaboration lively!  This year 14 works of art on canvases of varying sizes from 4' x 2' to 8" x 28" have been circulating to area artists age 2-94.  Seven of the pieces began with children painting from their memory and imaginations.  The other seven pieces are a photomontage of Cortland County contemporary and historical photographs thanks to local photographers and the Cortland County Historical Society.  Conceiver of the project, Reagen Troutman, decided to make the Cortland based compositions for Iterations tell a story through narrative pictures instead of last years landscape format.  Each piece has a story to tell that brings together different parts of Cortland's richness and history to life, coinciding with the Bi-centennial.

Several public collaborations have taken place during the month of April, making it possible for participation by a vast audience.  "I had one event where children who had never painted before, were painting on canvases larger then they were, explained Troutman. "In contrast to that event I would then bring these same canvases to local professional artists and challenge them to leave what the kids had painted, but to add to the painting." Events have occurred at the YMCA, YWCA, Center for the Arts, The Beard Building, the Homer Senior Center Paint Group, the Groton Paint Group, several county schools,  and the Art League.  The 14 completed pieces are all mixed media and are composed of oil paint, acrylic paint, watercolor paint, colored pencil, polymer clay, collage, fabric, and others.

Accompanying the paintings were journals where artists could document their ideas from the experience and share some of the personal folklore about the project and their lives. Polished pieces of the newly generated Cortland county folklore will accompany the artwork at the opening.

The auction started on May 2 and concludes on May 31 at midnight. The bids started at $45 dollars per piece of artwork.  All works of art had between 4-8 artist collaborating on them and over 20 hours of work into each piece. Regular bids can also be cast through Lloyd Purdy of the Downtown Partnership. Last year was a complete sell out. Proceeds for the sale of iterations 2008 will go to fund Iterations 2009.
Iterations 2008 is made possible by sponsorship from the Cortland County Convention and Visitors Bureau, The Cultural Council of Cortland County, The Downtown Partnership, Pinstriped Pokadots, YWCA of Cortland, creative people like you, and partial funding by the New York State Council of the Arts Decentralized Grant.

Funded by a grant from the Cultural Resources Council and the NYS Council on the Arts.

Thankyou to the Iterations 2008 Artists

We would like to give a special thankyou to all of the Cortland area artists that participated in this very successful project.

Its almost unbelieveable to imagine that 100 artists in three weeks cooperated with Reagen Troutman to create these pieces of art. We recognize that this year was especially challenging because the pieces were imaginitively composed by Reagen from historical and modern images juxtaposed as well as children's intuition. We thank you for the early morning drop offs, the late night calls,  the calm during the storm, your creative, your community spirit, and your committment to everything that makes Cortland a truly beautiful place to live.

Sincerely,

Reagen and Jared Troutman
